چکیده

The overvaluation hypothesis (Miller 1977) predicts that a) stocks are overvalued when there are short selling restrictions and that b) the overvaluation is increasing in the degree of divergence of opinion. We design an experiment that allows us to test these predictions in the laboratory. Our results support the hypothesis that prices are higher in the presence of short selling constraints. The overvaluation does not depend on the degree of divergence of opinion. JEL classification: C92, G14

Asset Prices Under Short-Sale Constraints

In this paper, we study how short-sale constraints affect asset price and market efficiency. We consider a fully rational expectations equilibrium model, in which investors trade for two reasons, to share risk and to speculate on private information, but they face short-sale constraints. Short-sale constraints limit both types of trades, and thus reduce the allocational and informational effici...

Short-sale constraints, information acquisition, and asset prices

This paper develops a model of information acquisition and portfolio choice under short-sale constraints. We show that short-sale constraints reduce information acquisition and both the constraints on short-selling and the reduced information acquisition affect investment decisions. The effects of short-sale constraints on investment decisions and asset prices are driven largely by the effects ...

Short-selling bans and institutional investors' herding behaviour: Evidence from the global financial crisis ¬リニ

a r t i c l e i n f o The literature on short-selling restrictions focusses mainly on a ban's impact on market efficiency, liquidity and overpricing. Surprisingly, little is known about the effects of short-sale constraints on herd behaviour. Since institutional investors have come to dominate mature stock markets and rely extensively on short sales, constraining these traders may influence the...

Differences of Opinion, Short-Sale Constraints, and Voluntary Disclosures

Research in finance and economics suggests that a firm’s stock price will be biased upwards when investors have differences of opinion and when pessimistic investors have high short-sale constraints. We build on this prior research and examine how managers respond in their forecasting behavior when their firm is overvalued due to these two constraints. We construct a measure of overvaluation us...

The Price Impact of Borrowing and Short-Sale Constraints

This study explores how trading constraints such as borrowing and short-sale constraints affect asset prices in the presence of asymmetric information. In a symmetric information environment, borrowing and short-sale constraints exacerbate downward and upward price movements, respectively. However, in the presence of information asymmetry, the price impact of each constraint is different. In an...
